Abstract

Nursing is often referred to as an art and a science. In 1978 Carper identified fundamental patterns of knowing in nursing that included the science(empirics) as well as the art(esthetics). She stated, " The kind of understanding of humans that comes from within by means of empathy, intuition, imagination could be one source in the discovery phase of knowledge generation." Critical care nurses have been perceived their intuititive findings. But intuition considered a second-rate substitute for intelligent and rational decision making and illegitimate adjunct. This study attempt to identify intuition in nursing not illegitimate. The findings by literature on western and oriental philosophy attributed to intuition in philosophy of Nursing science. The understanding about intuition in nursing is not opposite concept to rational and analystic knowledge. Rather, intuition is the highest level knowledge involved rational and analystic knowledge. And then intuition in nursing led the way for the process of science and art in nursing to include investigations of truly human phenomena above content as intuition schema in philosophy of nursing science. The strategies for intuition in nursing is followed. The first is epoche and bracketing in phenomenology, meditation in Buddistic philosophy, group-brainstorming, dialogue and story-sharing. The second involved describing the nurses-client process in all of its many dimensions(representing), elucidating the meaning of the nurse-client process(interpreting), and looking beyond the situation to focus on what might be(envisioning). The teaching strategy guided students in enlarging their view of caring. For the further study, we suggested to clarify intuitive experiences, to report finding and to develop learning program for enriched intuition grasp in nursing.
